1 - 3 January 2013 - The tourist part of Varkala is spread along a cliff top over looking a white sand beach. Mind you swimming is not advisable as the currents are deadly.
The pathway along the cliff top is lined with massage places, souvenir shops, restaurants and guest houses and these together with the visiting European back packers dressed in a variety of 'local' dress gives the whole place a feel like something out of the 1970's and you expect the Beatles to appear any moment - mind you nothing wrong with that !
The choice of food is wide but following our golden rule of cooked vegetarian our diet has really been a variation on the paneer, dhal and rice theme with the odd naan ! We did splash out on a piece of chocolate cake and apple pie and on our last night Stuart was persuaded to try some fish which is both plentiful and locally caught. Unfortunately the Butterfish was a bit 'meaty for his tastes but otherwise fine.
