Friday 6 December - Thursday Island lies off the most northerly tip of Australia, Cape York, in the Torres Straits which are a chain of islands stretching up to Papua. This was our entry to Australia and so there were short immigration procedures before we disembarked for a morning on the island.
The town itself pretty much consists of two streets and the highlight was a visit to the Green Fort which overlooks the Straits and still has the WW2 guns in place.
Back in town there was a new cultural centre with Torres Straits aboriginal artefacts and a very good cafe run by two Greek boys !
