29th/30th December - Having spent yesterday back in Fort Cochin today we headed south some 180 kms to Varkala. The road itself is reasonably good passing through villages and the odd town. Needless to say the drive itself was not calming !
Having settled into the The Gateway we took an afternoon walk along the beach and up a path to the top of the cliff which took us to the tourist part of Varkala. The North and South Cliff are a small and more touristy destination with an array of restaurants, souvenir shops and guest houses along the top of the cliff overlooking a white sand beach. Needless to say there are also a range of Ayurvedic massage places !
As this is Christmas/New Year the place is busy and it took a while to find a suitable eating place and we finally settled on a cliff-top restaurant which served a very nice vegetarian selection. That being said our diet has almost entirely consisted of rice, dhal, panner and various vegetable curries !
