Sunday 8 December - our arrival in Cairns was a low key affair although we did have to have our bags outside the cabin by 0700. Our final breakfast and a series of farewells and disembarked to face the Australia Customs. As it turned out our two jars of Italian jam and the wooden bowl we had bought in Kisar passed inspection and we boarded a taxi to pick up the hire car.
We had first been to Cairns about 18 years ago and it was quiet then. Driving through town it had grown with more modern buildings but still the same feel.
Our first 3 night stop on the drive south was at the EcoVillage Resort, Mission Beach which was about 150 kms south on the Bruce Highway. No really much bigger than a village we found the resort easily and unloaded the vast quantities of luggage we seem incapable of travelling anywhere without.
The resort consisted of about 10 cabins built around a beautiful landscaped pool and the planting gave everything a very secluded feel. A good start.
