Friday 29 November - the ship travelled all night and having not quiet closed the curtains the sun woke us up at 0530. As a tropical cyclone continues to hang over southern Indonesia breakfast was inside instead of on deck. A mammoth affair !!
As this is an 'expedition' ship and we are in the 'Forgotten Islands' the landings are all by Zodiac inflatables so a mandatory lesson on getting on and off took place at 0900 followed by a snorkelling brief !! After coffee our first Photography lecture may be we will pick up some tips over the week.
After lunch - more food - we arrived at our first stop Komodo Island (8°S 119°E) which is a National Park and home to the largest reptiles in the world the Komodo Dragons ! The afternoon was spent on Pink Beach in a sandy cove snorkelling and looking at the coral. The pink sand being due to the Red Organ Pipe coral which is makes up much of the sand. Much of which had been damaged before the area was declared a National Park but does now seem too be thriving.
Unfortunately we had no underwater equipment so nothing has been captured on film but sunset cocktails on the beach watching the sun go down was a fitting finale to the day.
