Sunday 5 February
PeruRail run a train from Cusco to Machu Picchu which is a grand way to travel - unfortunately due to the condition of the track the train actually departs from Ollytambo which is a 90 minute drive from Cusco ! So we set off at 0700 for the 0900 Vistadome.
The train itself was the best way to travel winding its way through river valleys and actually losing height as MP is lower than Cusco at 2430 metres. Arriving at MP station we had to make our way through the densely packed souvenier market to fid the bus stop and yet another USD 20 each. However walking was not an alternative as the road wound its way uphill. We had bought our entry tickets online but they were for the afternoon entry from 1300.
Having kicked our heels for a bit in the light rain we entered the archaeological site which is as grand as all the pictures you have already seen. And as it is off season it was not that crowded.
Back in the town we had some soup and salad before heading back to the train and afternoon tea - but with a fashion show thrown in by the train crew. The Chinese tour group on board proceeded to burn up their Union Pay cards.
The next two days we have in Cusco resting before heading to Puno and again in height of a 1000 metres.
