Despite some reservations about travelling to Myanmar which is still, despite recent improvements, a fairly unsavoury regime, we decided to visit. What we found was a country which time has quite literally forgot and a pace and style of life, even in the cities, hard to find elsewhere in SE Asia where mobile phones, motor bikes and western brands are everywhere to be seen. Here in Myanmar a mobile phone connection costs USD 600 and hardly a new car can bee seen on the roads - while we were here the Government announced the importation of 6000 second hand cars as substitution for those on the roads which are over 40 years old. This latest import is for a country of 50 million plus.Despite the problems and a terrible recent history with continuing injustices everywhere we went we met people who knew things could and should be better but were hopeful for the future and smiled all the time.
