Day 4 - Monday 28 March 2016
Having driven over the mountains we were intrigued to see the Shinkansen snaking its way on a single track and as we had a day spare on our 5 day pass decided to take the train from Morioka to Akita.
Although Morioka is on the main north south line from Tokyo to Hokkaido, the Akita Shinkansen is best described as a branch line and so getting a seta was no problem at least on the 1057 train. Although a Shinkansen train it is to really Shinkansen speeds as it climbs up through the mountain for the main part on a single track. Once through the mountains the land is flat and agricultural.
Our first stop was the Castle. As with many of Japanese cities they originated during feudal time and Akita is no exception. the castle itself no longer exists but the main gate and tower have been reconstructed and provide some idea of how Japan must have been in the Edo period.
Although a major town Akita was quiet. We have learnt that the place to look for eateries is around the station and we found a small place with he required deep fried prawn and rice.
Shopping was not a great success so we heard back to Morioka and home.
